PhD studentships in Portuguese NLP The NLX-Natural Language Group at the University of Lisbon has various positions to work on the following topics: corpus and treebanking, ontologies, shallow and deep linguistic processing. This work is carried on in view of areas such as e-learning environments, the semantic web, question-answering or machine translation. The PhD studentships are for 1 year in first instance, renewable for up to 3 years in total. Positions start on 1st December 2005 (or a.s.a.p.), and provide an annual maintenance grant in a range starting from euro 12,780 (tax free, social security and 24h insurance included). The positions are available to both EU- and non-EU-applicants. They all require residence in Lisbon, 35 hours/week research, and the stipend must result in a PhD dissertation. Our ideal candidates have a strong background in (one or more of) natural language processing, artificial intelligence, computational linguistics, cognitive science, or a related field. Good programming skills and experience are a strong asset. Native or near-native competence in Portuguese is crucial. Good communication skills in English (written and oral) are important. Applicants should have a keen interest in problem solving and NLP and a capacity to conduct individual and collaborative research consonant with the projects underway at NLX-Group. The successful applicants will work in a team involved in research activities being carried on in the scope of a number of national and international projects, involving close collaboration with other departments and numerous other Portuguese and international academic institutions.
