ReRelEM: Glossary

ReRelEM was a pilot task in the scope of Second HAREM whose goal was to encourage systems to recognize semantic relations between named entities. For the evaluation contest, the systems were evaluated according to 12 fully human annotated documents. Now, all 129 documents in the HAREM golden collection have been annotated.

The relations considered in this annotation are described below.

Note that no exhaustiveness was attempted as to the annotation of the inverse relations. In other words, some of the relations listed may have an inverse relation, but during the annotation process it was not felt necessary to emphasize it by adding a new relation (name).

This relation links an author and her/his work (a book, film, song, play, etc). Besides authorship, the relation can also express "promulgation", when it occurs between ORGANIZACAO_/ORG and OBRA_/TITLE. Other people that take part in the making of an OBRA_/TITLE (e.g., editors) are not considered authors, but featured as “produtor_de” ("producer").

CATEGs involved: ALL categories, as long as the entities involved have the same category.

The identity relation is the classical co-reference relation. It can take place between distinct lexical items, as long as they refer to the same entity. On the other hand, equality between lexical items does not ensure, per se, identity, as it happens when the entities have different referents.

We note that differences regarding TIPOS_/TYPES are not taken into consideration - only sameness across categories is required

a) one of the arguments of the relation is OUTRO/OTHER:

2.      the relation between PESSOA_/PERSON that is not characterized as inclusion or identity, but as an connectedness relation;

3.      the relation between a PESSOA_/PERSON and the LOCAL/PLACE "discovered by him/her", which appears frequently in encyclopedic and historical documents;

4.      the relation between an object ("Iphone"), its memory capacity ("8 gigabytes"/ "4 GB") and its price ("600 dólares"/ "cerca de 500 dólares");

5.      a relação entre/EVENT (Terremoto) and the duration (TEMPO_/TIME) of the event;
