Esta página também está disponível em português.

Geo-Net-PT 02 is a public Geographic Ontology of Portugal, which extends Geo-Net-PT 01. It was created by the XLDB Team of the University of Lisbon, Faculty of Sciences under project GREASE (Raciocínio Geográfico para Motores de Busca). Linguateca - Centro de Recursos Distribuído para o processamento computacional da Língua Portuguesa is handling the distribution of Geo-Net-PT.

A Geo-Net-PT 02 is a computational resource for applications demanding geographic information about Portugal. It respects the recommended international standards for publishing ontologies.

XLDB also provides a SPARQL endpoint for querying the ontology:Geo-Net-PT 02 SPARQL endpoint

For instance, the web site of the Municipality of Lisbon has the Lisbon municipality region as its geographic scope).

Comparatively to Geo-Net-PT 01, Geo-Net-PT 02 adds the following feature types (classes of geographic entities) to the physical domain:

Tipo de entidade geográfica Tipo de entidade geográfica

  • multilingual names (Lisboa[PT] is also Lisbon[EN], Lisbonne[FR] e Lissabon[DE])
  • footprints for both administrative and physical features
  • provenance information for each datum included in the ontology.

Alignment with Yahoo!GeoPlanet™

We provide an alignment between features in the Administrative with "Where On Earth Identifiers" (WOEID) from GeoPlanet™. The alignment produced is relatively complete, containing almost all the administrative divisions of Portugal (districts, municipalities and civil parishes) as well as a high number of other towns.

Feature Type Coverage (%)
Distrito (District) 100.0
Concelho (Municipality) 100.0
Ilha (Islands) 100.0
Freguesia (Civil Parish) 83.7
Localidade (Settlement) 27.6
Zona (Zone) 13.0

The aligment is available as an RDF file that can be queried through a SPARQL endpoint.

How is Geo-Net-PT 02 formatted?

Geo-Net-PT02 is published in the Web Ontology Language (OWL) format of the W3C. Other formats may be generated upon request.

XLDB also provides a SPARQL endpoint for querying the ontology: Geo-Net-PT 02 SPARQL endpoint

Why is a Geographic Ontology of Portugal needed?

The GREASE project develops a location-aware search engine, where pages can be matched with searches through associations of the geographic scopes of web pages with location data obtained by positioning devices embedded in their web access equipment.

The next Internet generation will be primarily accessed from portable devices that will offer dynamic access services to data distributed across multiple information sources. In the new environment, the information about geographic scopes will be essential in the new services once 3G technology becomes mainstream.
